Ovulation typically occurs 12 to 16 days before the next period, with 14 days being the average. The luteal phase (post-ovulation) is relatively consistent at 12 to 14 days.

Irregular cycles:

The follicular phase (pre-ovulation) is the variable part. Women with irregular cycles may ovulate on unpredictable days, making LMP based estimates less reliable.

Tracked ovulation:

How is ovulation related to my due date?

Your due date is directly determined by when you ovulated. Naegele's Rule assumes ovulation on day 14 of a 28 day cycle. If you ovulated later (e.g., day 20 of a 34 day cycle), your true due date is pushed back by 6 days compared to the standard 28 day calculation. Our calculator makes this adjustment automatically.

What is the luteal phase and why does it matter?

The luteal phase is the second half of the menstrual cycle, from ovulation to the start of the next period. It typically lasts 12 to 14 days and is remarkably consistent from cycle to cycle. Because the luteal phase is stable, variations in cycle length are almost always due to the follicular phase (the time before ovulation).

Can I ovulate more than once per cycle?

Multiple ovulation (releasing more than one egg in the same cycle) can occur, but it happens within a 24 hour window. You cannot ovulate at two different times in the same cycle. When two eggs are released simultaneously and both are fertilized, the result is fraternal (dizygotic) twins.

Can stress delay ovulation?

Yes. Physical or emotional stress can delay or even suppress ovulation by disrupting the hormonal signals (GnRH, FSH, LH) that trigger the ovulatory process. This is one reason why cycles can be irregular during stressful periods, and why LMP based due date calculations may be less accurate in such cycles.

What is anovulation?

Anovulation means a cycle in which no egg is released. It can occur occasionally in otherwise healthy women, or it can be a chronic condition associated with PCOS, thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances. Anovulatory cycles can still produce menstrual like bleeding, making it difficult to distinguish from ovulatory cycles without tracking.

How soon after ovulation can a pregnancy test be positive?

After ovulation and fertilization, implantation typically occurs 6 to 10 days later. hCG production begins at implantation and approximately doubles every 48 hours. Most sensitive home pregnancy tests can detect hCG 10 to 14 days after ovulation (around the time of the expected period), though some early detection tests may show a faint line as early as 9 to 10 days post ovulation.
