Conception Calculator – When Did You Conceive?

Estimate the date you conceived based on your due date, last menstrual period, or ultrasound measurements. Understanding your conception window helps retrace the early timeline of your pregnancy.

Select the first day of your most recent menstrual period.
Most cycles are 28 days. Normal range is 21–35 days.

How the Conception Calculator Works

Conception (fertilization) occurs when a sperm cell successfully penetrates and fertilizes an egg. This typically happens within 24 hours of ovulation. For a standard 28 day menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs around day 14, making the estimated conception date approximately LMP + 14 days. If you know your due date instead, the conception date can be reverse-calculated: EDD − 266 days. This is because the gestation period from conception to delivery is approximately 266 days (38 weeks), compared to 280 days (40 weeks) from the LMP.

The Science of Conception Timing

Several biological factors affect the precision of conception date estimates:

Ovulation variability:

While day 14 is average for a 28 day cycle, ovulation can occur anywhere from day 11 to day 21, depending on individual cycle patterns.

Sperm survival:

Sperm can remain viable in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days. This means intercourse occurring several days before ovulation can still result in conception on the day of ovulation.

Egg viability:

A released egg is viable for approximately 12 to 24 hours. Fertilization must occur within this window.

Benefits of Knowing Your Conception Date

Understand your timeline:

Knowing the approximate conception date helps you understand when your pregnancy began in biological terms.

Fetal age clarity:

The conception date marks the true beginning of your baby's development (fetal age), as opposed to gestational age, which starts 2 weeks earlier.

Cycle awareness:

By comparing your estimated conception date with your cycle history, you can better understand your ovulation patterns.

Medical history context:

If you need to recall potential exposures (medications, travel, illness) during early pregnancy, the conception date provides a specific reference point.

Accuracy of Conception Date Estimates

For natural conceptions, the estimated conception date is an approximation with a typical uncertainty of ±3 to 5 days. The margin of error comes from variability in ovulation timing and the fact that sperm can survive for up to 5 days. For IVF pregnancies, the conception date is known precisely because fertilization occurs in the laboratory. For IUI pregnancies, the insemination date provides a very close approximation of the conception date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a doctor tell me exactly when I conceived?

For natural pregnancies, no. An exact conception date cannot be determined medically because sperm can survive for days, and the exact moment of fertilization is unknown. An early ultrasound can estimate gestational age with ±5 to 7 days of accuracy, which gives a conception window but not an exact date.

How long after intercourse does conception happen?

Conception can happen within minutes to 5 days after intercourse, depending on when ovulation occurs. If sperm are already present in the fallopian tube when the egg is released, fertilization can occur almost immediately after ovulation.

Is the conception date the same as the ovulation date?

Very close, but not necessarily identical. Fertilization typically occurs within 12 to 24 hours of ovulation. For practical purposes, the conception date and ovulation date are considered approximately the same day in obstetric calculations.

How does cycle length affect the estimated conception date?

Longer cycles typically mean later ovulation. For a 35 day cycle, ovulation likely occurs around day 21 instead of day 14. Our calculator adjusts for this by using the formula: conception day = cycle length − 14. This shifts the estimated conception date accordingly.

Can I determine paternity from the conception date?

An estimated conception date can provide a general timeframe, but it cannot definitively determine paternity because: (1) sperm can survive up to 5 days, making the fertile window wider than a single day, and (2) the estimate has an inherent margin of error. DNA testing is the only reliable method for confirming paternity.

What is a conception window?

The conception window, also called the fertile window, is the span of approximately 6 days during each cycle when pregnancy is possible the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Conception is most likely when intercourse occurs within 1 to 2 days of ovulation.

Why is the conception date 2 weeks after the LMP?

In a standard 28 day cycle, ovulation (and therefore conception) occurs approximately 14 days after the first day of the last period. Gestational age includes those first 2 pre conception weeks, which is why you are considered "2 weeks pregnant" at the time of conception.

Can I calculate the conception date from my due date?

Yes. Use the "Known Due Date" tab and enter your EDD. The calculator will reverse calculate your estimated conception date by subtracting 266 days from the due date.

Does stress or illness affect when I ovulate?

Yes. Stress, illness, travel, and significant lifestyle changes can delay or advance ovulation in a given cycle. This is one reason why LMP based conception date estimates can have a margin of error. If your cycle was disrupted, the actual conception date may differ from the calculated estimate.

How accurate is a conception date from an ultrasound?

A first-trimester ultrasound estimates gestational age with ±5 to 7 days accuracy. From that gestational age, the conception date is estimated by subtracting 2 weeks. So an ultrasound derived conception date has roughly the same ±5 to 7 day margin of uncertainty.
