How IVF Due Dates Are Calculated

In natural conception, the exact date of fertilization is usually unknown. In IVF and other assisted reproductive technology (ART) pregnancies, however, the timeline is known precisely. This makes IVF due date calculations the most accurate method available. The calculation depends on the developmental stage of the embryo at transfer:

Day 5 Blastocyst Transfer:

EDD = Transfer Date + 261 days (or 266 - 5)

Day 3 Cleavage-Stage Transfer:

EDD = Transfer Date + 263 days (or 266 - 3)

The formula is derived from the fact that full gestation is 266 days from fertilization. Since the embryo's age at transfer is known, we simply subtract those days from the total.

Understanding IVF Gestational Age

When your fertility clinic communicates with your obstetrician, they convert your IVF dates to an equivalent LMP date. This allows all prenatal care to follow the standard gestational age framework:

On the day of a Day 5 transfer, your equivalent gestational age is 2 weeks and 5 days (2w5d).

On the day of a Day 3 transfer, your equivalent gestational age is 2 weeks and 3 days (2w3d).

Will my IVF due date change after an ultrasound?

Typically, no. Because the exact dates of fertilization and transfer are known, IVF dates take precedence over ultrasound estimates. Ultrasounds in IVF pregnancies are primarily used to monitor growth rather than revise the due date.

What is the difference between Day 3 and Day 5 transfers?

A Day 3 transfer uses an embryo at the cleavage stage (6 to 8 cells). A Day 5 transfer uses a blastocyst (approximately 100+ cells). Day 5 transfers have become more common because blastocysts have higher implantation rates. The due date calculation accounts for the embryo's age at the time of transfer.

Does it matter if I had a fresh or frozen embryo transfer?

No. The due date calculation is the same whether your embryo was transferred fresh or after cryopreservation (frozen). The embryo's developmental stage (Day 3 or Day 5) at the time of transfer is what matters for the calculation.

How is gestational age tracked after IVF?

Your fertility clinic will calculate an equivalent LMP date from your transfer date. From that point forward, standard gestational age tracking applies. Our calculator provides this equivalent LMP date automatically.

Can this calculator be used for IUI pregnancies?

For IUI (intrauterine insemination) pregnancies, you know the approximate date of insemination, which is close to the date of ovulation. You can use the LMP method and enter a date approximately 14 days before the insemination as your LMP, or consult your fertility specialist for the most accurate dating.

Do IVF babies tend to arrive earlier or later than their due date?

Yes. IVF dating is accurate to within ±1 to 3 days, while even the best first trimester ultrasound has a margin of ±5 to 7 days. This is because the exact date of fertilization is documented in IVF, eliminating all guesswork.

What if I transferred multiple embryos?

If you transferred multiple embryos and have a singleton pregnancy, the due date calculation remains the same. For twin or higher-order pregnancies, the EDD is calculated the same way, but delivery typically occurs earlier (average 36 weeks for twins). Your MFM specialist will provide twin specific guidance.

Does the stimulation protocol affect the due date?

No. The due date calculation is based solely on the embryo transfer date and the embryo's developmental stage. The type of stimulation protocol, trigger medication, or retrieval date does not factor into the EDD calculation.
